Villa Giuseppina is located in Tremezzo, a village on the western shore of Lake Como, opposite Bellagio on the eastern shore. The villa?s history starts in the 17th century and it was remodelled in the baroque style in the 18th century, undergoing considerable change at the hands of highly skilled stucco decorators and painters of the school of Tiepolo. The villa combines the atmosphere of 18th century living with all modern comforts and conveniences, all in what is still a private house lived in by the Serbelloni family heirs.
The Serbelloni family is of ancient lineage, related to the Borromeo and the de Medici di Marigliano families. It is today best known for the military exploits of Gabrio Serbelloni (1509-1580), who was at one time captain of the papal guard and was appointed Viceroy of Tunis by Phillip II of Spain. At the beginning of the Second World War the most important collections of the Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan were removed to the villa: lutes by Stradivarius and Amati, French tapestries, porcelains, even the entire room where Napoleon slept during his Italian campaign.
Consequently part of the villa has been turned into a museum. This part is not available for rent, but permission to visit may be sought from the owners.
