The Cathedral of Amalfi
The most important monument of the Amalfi Coast

If you have chosen to stay in one of our luxury villas for rent in Amalfi Coast, you need to visit the wonderful Amalfi Cathedral, which overlooks the city center.
The Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Andrew, is the main place of Catholic worship in the city, dedicated to the saint by virtue of the miracle that took place on June 1544, when Amalfi was saved from the Saracen invasion due to a sudden storm.
Placed on top of a majestic staircase of 62 steps, the Amalfi Cathedral overlooks the city with the gold and bright colors of its facade representing the scene of Christ among the Evangelists. Its decorations are Byzantine, Arab and Norman.
The current church was born from the union of two pre-existing churches during the 1200’s: the Basilica of the Crucifix, dating to the sixth century, and the Major Basilica of St. Andrew of the ninth century.
The Cathedral has a beautiful Romanesque bell tower covered with yellow and green mosaics, existing since 1180. Beyond the porch, you have access to the Cathedral’s front door which is entirely made of bronze and comes from Constantinople thanks to the donation of a patrician citizen.
Inside the cathedral in late Baroque style, you can see, above the altar, the painting of the Martyrdom of St. Andrew, while in the aisles there are the Mother of pearl Cross from the Holy Land and the Reliquary Bust of St. Andrew.
Among the many treasures kept inside the cathedral, we can mention the wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, the Cloister of Paradise, built in the second half of the thirteenth century as a cemetery for the most famous citizens of Amalfi, and the precious Crypt, which holds the relics of St. Andrew.
