The wine producing area between Florence and Siena has long been a favourite of the British and their US cousins. Not for nothing is it known as Chiantishire, and it just must have the largest ex-patriate community of any area in Italy. Bounded on the west by the Florence-Siena highway and to the east by the Monti di Chianti to the west of the AI Florence to Rome motorway, it has been many people’s first introduction to the delights of the Italian countryside and its food and wine. A lifelong love affair for some. Typified by rolling hills and lines of cypresses, one of the best ways to visit is along the N222, the “Chiantigiana” from Florence to Siena, taking in Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti and passing close to Radda in Chianti. A picturesque road for most of its length, allow plenty of time for traffic, but most of all for stops to admire the views and at local restaurants and wineries in which the area abounds. Take time to learn a little Italian and you will understand that it is the lilting accent of the region that has given the language its musical reputation.
